SAINTFIELD GOLF CLASSIC

Back in 2003 First Saintfield sent a team to Brazil to support aspects of “church planting.” As a means of fund raising I decided to organise a Golf Outing at Rockmount Golf Club. Since then each year on the last Monday of May we have had what is now known as the “Saintfield Golf Classic.”

Each year a different charity has been supported by this means i.e:
2003 Brazil (Church Planting)
2004 Philippines (Helping Hands Ministries) & Sri Lanka (Lotus Buds Children’s Home)
2005 Romania (Project Romania)
2006 Russia (Athletes in Action)
2007 Kenya (Give & Take Appeal)

We supported Give and Take Appeal, Kenya this year after hearing Ken Finlay speak so passionately about his experiences and the living conditions of people, children in particular in Kenya.

Let me quote from Ken, “Growing up anywhere brings its share of problems, but growing up in a place like East Africa (Kenya) is a struggle that is beyond imagination. Death is common, 20% of African children do not reach the age of 6 years. Life is hard and yet most of the world is unaware of their plight. They are amongst the voiceless of the world, needing others to speak on their behalf.”

Ken and his friends have approached the matter at three levels:
• By supporting and financing the education of 526 Aids orphans at Manyaka Primary School.
• Providing financial assistance to the Children’s Rescue Centre which deals with the welfare of abandoned children.
• Supplying materials and finance to Kapsaya Medical Centre.

When invitations were sent to possible sponsors and golfers details of this worthwhile cause were outlined, the response was tremendous. My sincere thanks go out to all the sponsors who supported us financially and by gifts of prizes. Monday 28 May was a glorious day for a round of golf and the 69 people who played all enjoyed the outing. Thanks also to a number of people, including all the players who contributed donations to the ‘appeal’. At the prize giving Ken had an opportunity to speak and tell how support for the appeal will help to make a difference and change the life of a child in Africa. Almost £5000 has been raised and I thank all the people who helped in any way to make this day a success.

Matthew Chapter 25 v 40. And the King will answer and say to them “Assuredly I say to you, in as much as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to me.”
